How to do the M is for Mouse Maze! Letter M Activity
This letter M phonics activity is the perfect way to introduce or practice the sound of the letter M. It’s great practice for younger children from toddlers all the way to kindergarten students. Older children may even enjoy helping you prepare the activity by doing the cutting out and glueing.
Instructions:
- Print the M is for Mouse Maze printable. You will find the free pdf file at the bottom of this article.
- Cut off the strip that has the mouse on it.

- Cut out the mouse. *Note: alternatively, you can make a little mouse craft to go on the magnet. Help your child form a mouse with a medium pom pom for a face, two smaller pom poms for ears, and a tiny pom pom for a nose.
- Glue the mouse to a magnet.

- Tape the letter M Mouse Maze at the corners to the tray or cookie sheet.

- *Note: I recommend starting with the uppercase letter M maze. I usually start with upper case letters when teaching letter sounds to my children because they are easier to differentiate than lower case letters. Some of the lowercase letters are easy for young children to confuse (such as b, d, p, and q). I have included a lowercase letter m maze in the printable because the lower case letter m and the uppercase letter M are so similar in shape that most children will be able to make the connection between them easily.
- Place the mouse (which is now glued to a magnet) on the tray. Place the second magnet beneath the tray so that the two magnets stick to each other.
- Teach or remind your child of the sound of the letter M. Make the mmm sound for letter M, like the sound at the beginning of mouse and maze. Tell your child that the words mouse and maze start with the letter M sound. Say mouse and maze while emphasizing the mmm sound to your child.
- Tell your child that she is going to help the mmm mouse find its way through the letter M maze to get to the cheese! Demonstrate this for her by moving the magnet underneath the tray to make the mouse move through the maze.
- If you are using both the uppercase and lowercase letter M mazes, explain to your child that this is uppercase M.
- As your child moves the mouse through the maze, say the M sound over and over so he will make the connection between the letter shape and the sound.

- Once your child has completed the upper case M mouse maze, you can do the lowercase m mouse maze if you think it will not be confusing to your child. Show your child the lowercase m mouse maze and explain that it is lowercase m, which is like a baby m. It makes the same sound as capital M. Repeat the mmm sound to emphasize the connection.
- Let your child move the mouse through the lowercase m mouse maze.
