The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears is one of the most popular fairytales for young children and this felt finger puppet set will help make this all time favorite come alive for your child! Use this set of finger puppets for toddlers and preschoolers for a fun story-telling activity that is great for language skills development, or to bond with your young kids through pretend play. You can have so much fun with these felt finger puppets at home or in the classroom! They make great props for a narration activity, so they are helpful for homeschool too! Because they are easy to make, so they are a great craft project to do with your older kids (put those developing fine motor skills to work!) or they can even be a fun project for your mature crafty kid to do alone. They use just a handful of inexpensive materials so they are a very inexpensive craft. Chances are good that you already have the materials needed to make these DIY finger puppets at home. In this post I will show you how to make felt finger puppets that are not only simple and cute, but also quick – this project can be completed in about an hour from start to finish. You Will Need the Following Craft Supplies and Tools:
You only need a handful of inexpensive materials to make the patterns for felt finger puppets come to life!
- felt pieces – you choose the colors! Because the puppets are tiny, you can make them out of scraps – they are a super economical project! I used brown for the three bears puppets, a flesh tone for Goldilocks, yellow for her hair, pink for her dress and little pink bows, white for Goldilock’s collar, and blue for Daddy Bear’s bowtie
- googly eyes or fabric paint, like Puffy Paint
- embroidery thread – optional, but you can add some cute finishing touches and facial features with it! If you go this route to add the smaller details, you will probably want black thread, red or pink thread, and blue thread
- small pom poms
- scissors
- hot glue gun
- thread
- sewing machine – this is optional! You can also hand-stitch the puppets if you prefer or use hot glue or fabric glue
- finger puppet templates – find the printable pattern at the end of the post
Instructions for Making The Three Bears Finger Puppets:
Are you ready to make your own puppets? Let’s get started!
- To make the set of Papa Bear, Mama bear, and Baby Bear, first cut out the pattern pieces (from the free patterns for felt finger puppets below)
- Cut the pattern pieces out of your chosen colors of felt. You will need six body pieces, six ears, and two bows – one will be Daddy Bear’s bowtie and one will be a hairbow for Mummy Bear.

- For the bodies of the three bears, sandwich the ears between the back and front of the body before sewing the sides of the body together. You can hold the ears in place with a couple of stitches if you would like, or you can just catch them in the stitching as you sew the body front and body back pieces together. You can sew the puppets together with a sewing machine or use a whip stitch, a blanket stitch, or even a back stitch. Sew a scant 1/4 inch around the sides and top of the body leaving the bottom open for a finger. If you prefer not to sew, you can use hot glue or fabric glue to attach the ears to the back of the body, then glue the front of the body to the back all around the edges, leaving the bottom of the body open.

- For Goldilocks, the first step is to sew (or glue) the puppet body pieces together in the same way that you sewed or glued the bears together. Now hot glue or hand-stitch on the hair, dress, collar, and bow. I sewed the dress on but glued the rest of the felt pieces because it was quicker and easier. Sewing might give a more professional look, but the small pieces are kind of tough to sew on. Whichever way you prefer to do it is fine! You will want to attach the dress first, lining the bottom of the dress up with the bottom of the puppet body. Next add the collar at the top of the dress lining the top of the collar up with the neckline of the dress. After that add the hair – the hair will overlap the dress and collar. And finally, add the bow. Use the photo below as a guide for placement. I put the bow off to the side, but you can place it wherever you would like. You can even cut out an additional bow and give Goldilocks pigtails if you want!

- Now that you have the puppets assembled, it’s time to add the finishing touches. Use hot glue to glue on little pom poms for the noses on the three bears, or you can paint them on if you prefer. Attach the bow and bowtie with hot glue as well.

- Add eyes to Goldilocks and the bears with embroidery floss by tying French knots, or use fabric paint, like Puffy Paint, to paint them on, or glue on googly eyes. And last of all, paint on or use embroidery thread to stitch a mouth onto all of the puppets.
Now your puppets are finished! They are ready for little hands to use them to tell the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story!
