Materials Needed for the Mother’s Day Craft for Kids

You will need the following materials to make your darling Mother’s Day craft for kids:

  • Mommy We Love You printable – you can find the free template at the end of the post. There is a template with three, four, or five spots for handprints, so you can print the one that is appropriate for your family size.
  • Heart cut-outs – find the free pdf at the end of the post.
  • Paint – acrylic paint works great. You may want to choose a washable paint if you are worried about the paint going astray. You will need a different color for each flower handprint.
  • Paint brush – a nice wide flat brush works best.
  • Scissors – for cutting out the paper hearts
  • Paper Plates or bowls – for pouring out the paint
  • Paper towels – optional, but I recommend having some handy for wiping the paint off of your children’s hands
  • Smocks – optional, but always a good idea when working with young children and paint!
  • An 11×14 or 11×17 frame – this is optional, but it finishes your Mother’s Day craft nicely and makes it into a sweet keepsake.

Instructions for Making the Mother’s Day Craft for Kids

  • Print the Mommy We Love You printable that has the number of flower stems to match the number of handprints that you want to include on your craft. You can have up to five kids do one handprint each, or you can have some of the kids do more than one handprint, whatever you choose!
  • Note: Most of the printables are sized at 11×14 inches and 11×17 inches, so if your printer can’t handle that size of paper you may need to have it printed elsewhere. Walmart can do these sizes, and your local library might be able to as well! Also – it is a little bit hard to find 11×17 inch frames. I was able to find some on Amazon and Hobby Lobby however. I bet Michaels has some as well.
  • Once you have printed the Mommy We Love You printable, prepare the hearts and the paint.
  • Cut out the paper hearts. You will need one for each handprint.
  • Squirt some paint onto a paper plate or paper bowl. You will need a bit more than a quarter sized pool of paint for each handprint.
  • Apply the paint to the child’s hand. You want a nice thick coat but not so much that there are globs. Make sure to get the paint all over the palm and the tips of the fingers. Do this one child as a time so that the paint does not dry before you make the handprint.
  • Place a paper heart in the center of the child’s palm.
