Fun Phonics! Do You Have THAT? The Sounds of TH (FREE Printable!)

The sounds of TH TH digraph game

The TH digraph is kind of a tricky digraph to learn, but your child will get the hang of it in no time with this fun TH digraph game! This simple game for learning to read TH digraph words is played like Go Fish. It will help your child to learn the sound of TH in no time at all!

Materials Needed for Your TH Digraph Words Game:

  • THAT Game printable (below)
  • White card stock – regular white printer paper will work, but card stock will make your TH digraph game more durable
  • Laminator (optional, but I strongly recommend laminating theTH digraph game cards for durability)
  • Scissors or paper cutter (the sliding type of paper cutter that is meant for paper crafts works well for this kind of cutting)

How to Prepare the Do You Have THAT TH Digraph Words Game:

  • Print the THAT Game printable on card stock or printer paper (the free printable PDF is below)
  • Laminate the cards (optional, but strongly recommended!)
  • Cut out the cards

That’s it! Pretty simple!

Before You Play:

Before your play this TH digraph words game, briefly introduce the two sounds of TH to your child. To do this, follow the steps below:

  • Make the TH digraph with magnetic alphabet letters, letter tiles, or other moveable letters, or just write it on a white board.
  • Tell your child that when T and H are next to each other like this, they make a new sound.
  • The new sound can actually sound two different ways. The TH digraph can make the beginning sound in the word THE and the ending sound in the word TEETH. The video below can help you explain these two sounds or refresh your memory of what they are.
  • Practice the TH sound by spelling some TH digraph words with your moveable alphabet (or write them on the white board). Some words you can try are: the, teeth, that, this, tooth, thick, thin, them, bath, moth.
  • Alternatively, you can practice reading TH digraph words by laying out one of each of the word cards from the game and asking your child to read the words. Once your child is comfortable with the sound of TH, you can practice by playing the TH digraph game!
  • Shuffle up the cards and deal them to your players (you need at least two players for this game, but you can include more!)
  • Deal four cards to each player. Put the remaining cards in a draw pile.
  • Explain the Do You Have THAT? TH digraph game: The object of the game is to collect sets of four matching word cards. The first player will look at his cards and say a word from one of his cards out loud – then ask one of the other players – “Do you have that?” If the player does have a card or cards with that word, she will say, “I do have that,” and will give the card or cards to the first player. If she does not have that word, she will say, “I do not have that,” and the first player will draw from the draw pile, and the next player takes her turn. When either player has a set of four word cards, he will put those in his score pile. Whoever has the most cards in their score pile at the end wins!
