Your child will learn the sound of OR in no time at all with this silly activity!
Materials Needed:
- OR Words printable (below)
- Would You Rather printable (below)
- Scissors or paper cutter
- Laminator and laminating sheets (optional)
Instructions:
- Print the OR Words and Would You Rather printables
- Laminate the pages (optional)
- Cut out the boxes on both printables
- Teach your child the sound of OR. OR makes a long O sound with an R sound at the end – just like the word or, and the middle sounds in storm and fork.
- Practice sounding out a few OR words – write some of the following words on a white board or with a moveable alphabet and help your child sound them out: born, storm, torn, form, pork, for
- Play the OR Would You Rather? game. Lay out the box that contains the words “Would you rather” in front of your child. Underneath that box place the stack of action cards, and under that stack, place the word OR. Under the word OR, place the OR words face down. Your setup will look like this:

- Have your child flip over one card from the action pile and two cards from the OR word pile.
- You can read the action word for her, or have her try to read it if she is becoming confident in reading and is ready for that step. Have her flip over two OR words and ask her to sound them out.

- In the example above, you will say “Would you rather talk to a…” – then point to the word horse, or, and sword and prompt her to read the words. Then she gets to decide what she would rather!
- Repeat by flipping over the next set of cards.
- Give her as much assistance as she needs. Remind her of the sound of OR and to look for the OR in the word if she is struggling. Some of the words in the OR word pile are more challenging than others. Remove any words that you think are too challenging at this time.
- Avoid overwhelming her – if it is a struggle to read the action words or if it will take too much mental energy, simply read them for her – the focus for this activity is the OR words, so you want to have her put her energy into sounding those out.
- Most of all, have fun! When she is ready to be done, the game is over.
