Materials Needed for Your Heart Hedgehog Printable Valentine’s Day Craft
You will need the following simple materials to make your printable Valentine’s Day Craft:
- Colored paper, construction paper, or cardstock in different colors. We used natural light brown, pink, and purple cardstock for our Heart Hedgehogs.
- Googly eyes (optional) – you need one for each hedgehog you will make. If you do not have googly eyes, you can simply draw the eye of the hedgehog or make an eye out of paper.
- Pom poms (optional) – you will need one pom pom for each hedgehog that you make. I used a medium sized pink pom pom. If you do not have pom poms on hand, you can use an extra paper heart for a nose, or make a different shaped nose out of paper.
- Glue stick or school glue
- Heart-shaped hole punch (optional – but handy if you are making several Valentine’s Day crafts). You will want one that makes about a one-inch heart

Instructions for Making the Heart Hedgehog
- Print the Heart Hedgehog on paper or cardstock in the color of your choice. Alternatively, you can print the templates, cut them out, and use them as patterns to trace onto construction paper. Or, if your child really likes to color or paint, you can have them paint or color the printable! Now that I think about it, having your child paint the Heart Hedgehog would be a fun way to make the activity last longer for the crafty kids who really love to do art projects, and a perfect way to make the end result a little more unique and personal.
- Now it’s time to put those scissor skills to use! Cut out the Heart Hedgehog and all the little hearts. You can make the hearts whatever color you choose. You can use one color for all the little hearts, or alternate colors like I did, make a rainbow colored hedgehog, or just make a random colorful hedgehog. Whatever you would like! You will need approximately 35 hearts total. This will be no problem for older kids, but younger kids might need a little help cutting out the heart shape.

- If you want to cut the hearts the really easy way you can use a heart-shaped hole punch. I’m a cheater so that’s what I did. You can find one for less than $10 on Amazon or at the craft store. I used a heart punch that made a one inch wide heart. It’s a great idea to cut your hearts out this way if you are doing this craft with several young children that need help with the cutting part. Older children will love punching the hearts out for you! There’s something really satisfying about that hole punch… it’s a fun activity in and of itself! If you are making the hearts with a heart punch, you don’t need to print out the Hedgehog Hearts printable. You can just use blank paper.
- Helpful hint: to cut the hearts out even faster with a heart hole punch, you can double up the paper so that you get two hearts for every punch!
- Now it’s time to glue the hearts onto your hedgehog! Start with the back of your hedgehog, and layer the hearts in rows until all but the feet and face of your hedgehog are covered. If you are doing the craft with preschoolers or young children, you might want to show them an example hedgehog, and then let them put the hearts on however they want. Layering the hearts in neat rows might be too much to ask for younger kids.

- Once the hearts are all on, you can add the finishing touches! Give your hedgehog a googly eye and a pom pom nose.
- All done!
