As soon as my daughter learned there would be cookies AND pie involved, she couldn’t wait to do this activity!
Items Needed for This Activity:
- Cookie Tally Sheet and Pie Tally Sheet
- IE Words Printable
- Mini cookies
- Mini pie
Instructions:
- Print the Cookie Tally Sheet, the Pie Tally Sheet, and the IE Words. Optional – laminate the tally sheets if you plan to reuse these materials.
- Cut out the ie words.
- Arrange the tally sheets, the cookies, and the pie in front of your child.
- Teach your child that IE can make the long i sound in pie or the long e sound in cookie.
- Explain to your child that he is going to read some words, and if the word has the long i sound like pie, he is going to make a mark in the box on the pie tally sheet. If the word has a long e sound like in cookie, he will make a mark in the box on the cookie tally sheet. He will have to try both sounds to know which one works. Once he gets three marks in the cookie box, he can have a cookie, when he gets three marks in the pie box, he can have a bite of pie (or however you want to do it.)

Here’s an example video to get you started:
I used a moveable alphabet when I did this activity with my daughter, and you can do that or use the word cards I provided, either way works!
Have fun and let me know how it goes!
