Fun Phonics! Learn the Sound of EE with EE Street

This is a super simple and fun activity to help your child learn the sound of ee. All you need is some sidewalk chalk, a fun ride-on, and a place to ride!

Instructions:

  • Find a sidewalk, driveway, basketball court, or other safe place for your child to ride a bike, plasma car, scooter, etc.
  • Choose a path and use the sidewalk chalk to make a “Welcome to EE Street” sign at the beginning
  • Create a road with dotted lines for your child to follow
  • Write an ee word with sidewalk chalk every few feet along the path. Make sure it is nice and big and clear so it is easy to read. Here are some words you can use:
  • feet
  • meet
  • greet
  • sweet
  • beep
  • keep
  • steep
  • jeep
  • tree
  • free
  • see
  • bee
  • queen
  • seen
  • weep
  • deep
  • sheep
  • Explain to your child that ee makes a long e sound, like the sound in street.

  • Ask your child to “drive” along EE Street, and stop and read each word as he goes.
  • You can also do this inside the house if you have the space by typing out the words in a large font and taping them to the floor, and using masking or painter’s tape to make the street.
  • If your child enjoys this activity, you can do it repeatedly to practice ee words and other words too, such as sight words.

Have fun and happy reading!
