Practice Reading SH Sound Words
Before you play SH Fishing, briefly teach your child the SH sound and practice reading a few SH sound words with him or her.
- Teach your child the sound of SH. When an SH are together in a word they make a new sound. It is the sound found at the beginning of shut and the end of fish.
- Below is a video of the SH sound in case you are uncertain!
- There’s a great song called Sh – Quiet Girl Song that can help your child learn and remember the SH sound. It is on a fabulous album called Sounds Fun Phonics by Heidi Butkus that is a great tool in helping kids learn phonics. You can find the album on Spotify, and possibly on other streaming services as well. Feel free to use the song to help your child remember the SH sound.
- When your child can remember the sound of SH, practice sounding out a few SH sound words. You can use a moveable alphabet, magnetic letters, letter tiles, or just a whiteboard for this. I recommend using tangible letters if at all possible. Letting your child handle and move the letters will help him remember what he is learning and learn it faster – and he’ll enjoy it more too!
- Try some simple SH sound words like shut, ship, shot, rash, and fish.
- When your child gets the hang of reading SH sound words, you can play SH Fishing!
How to Play SH Fishing
- Go fish! Instruct your child to catch a fish by dangling the fishing rod or magnet over the paperclip on a fish. When he catches a fish, have him read the word on the fish. Remind him of the SH sound if needed. Let him put his fish in a basket. Repeat until he has read all the words or until he has gotten tired or lost interest.
- Be sure not to push! When your child is losing interest go ahead and stop, even if she has only read a few words. A few minutes of consistent practice a day is enough for a young child!
Remember to have fun and let me know how it goes!
