If you have a reluctant learner, try this activity!
You will need:
- Ice Cream! We used chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and mint chip to match the scoops in the activity, but you can use any flavors
- Soft C Ice Cream Printable
Instructions:
- (optional) laminate the Soft C Ice Cream pages
- cut out the scoops, bowl, and cone
- Teach your child about soft C: the letter C can sometimes make the same sound as the letter S. When the letter e, i, or y comes right after the letter C, C will make an S sound, like in the word ice or cent.
- Now let your child try reading the words on the ice cream scoops. Help him as needed. As he reads a scoop, he can place it in the bowl or on the cone. Make sure he knows that he’ll have some real ice cream! You can do this however you would like, but I told my daughter that we would scoop ice cream to match the scoops that she read, and she was super motivated to read soft C words!
- When he’s all done, recreate his ice cream dish or cone in real life! We used a mini scoop to scoop the ice cream so that the amount was reasonable. I told my daughter before we started the activity that we would use a mini scoop for the real ice cream so she would have a realistic expectation.
- Enjoy your ice cream together!
