Is there anything cuter than watching a toddler concentrate? I loved watching my little guy play this big matching game – it was so cute to see his little hands and little mind working hard to match the bugs! The bug matching game is easy and quick to put together. It makes a great quiet activity, and you can even add velcro so you can use it on the go! Once you show her how it works, your toddler will probably be able to do the bug matching game on her own, so you might even get a couple of minutes to get something done! This bug matching game is appropriate for children about two and up, and it’s great for learning and practicing the names of bugs. So you get some language development practice in too! Read on for simple instructions on putting together the bug matching game and the free printable.
Materials Needed to Make Your Bug Matching Game:
To make the bug matching game, you will need:
- the Bug Matching printable
- two sheets of white card stock
- a color printer
- scissors or a paper cutter
- a laminator (if you want to laminate it – this is optional, but I highly recommend it! Otherwise it won’t stand up to toddler handling for long!)
Instructions for Making the Game:
- Print two copies of the Bug Matching printable
- Laminate both copies (optional)
- Cut out the bug squares on ONE sheet only. These will be your game cards. The other sheet will be your game board.
Time to Play the Bug Matching Game!
- Lay out the board and cards and show them to your toddler.
- Hand him a card, the bee for example, and ask him if he can find the bee on the board.
- Ask him to put the bee card on the other bee.
- Guide him as much as he needs until he gets the idea. He’ll probably catch on pretty quickly, and be able to do the rest himself.

You can do this activity with your toddler as a bonding and learning activity, or let him enjoy it on his own while you work with your other children, or get something else done!
